German scientists developed a new remedy to prevent caries - a chewing gum, containing probiotics, as Chemistry and Industry mazagine informs.
Probiotics - are live microorganisms, which affect human health positively, coming to an alimentary canal in sufficient quantity. These microbes, in particular lactic acid bacillus and bifidum bacteria can displace inimical bacteria and restore broken microflora balance. Foods, enriched with live bacteria, in particular yogurts, are wide spread for struggle with disbacteriosis and diseases, connected with it.
Experts of BASF chemical laboratory added probiotic bacteria Lactobacillus anti-caries in a chewing gum, tooth-paste and mouthwash. These bacteria can resist inimical streptococci Streptococcus mutans efficiently, preventing their fastening to surface of teeth and reducing their concentration.
Streptococcus mutans contribute to development of caries: they turn sugar, coming with food, in agressive acids, which destroy enamel.
Developers tested this chewing gum on quite big quantity of people and discovered that it can significantly reduce level of inimical bacteria, as BASF representative Andreas Reindl informed. According to him, clinical tests confirmed efficiency of new products. “We plan to issue first hygienic remedies for mouth cavity, containing probiotics lactic acid bacillus in 2007″, - Reindl informed.
Nevertheless, experts warn, usage of chewing gum with beneficent bacteria is not a substitute for regular toothbrushing. “The best preventive measure against caries is reduction of sugar consumption, teeth strengthening with help of fluoride and regular toothbrushing to remove dental plaque”, - member of British Dental Association, Gordon Watkins, informed.
Caries is wide spread. According to WHO, about 5 millions of people in the world suffer from this disease.
